New Study Explores Non-Psychedelic Use of Psilocybin for OCD Treatment

A recent study published in Translational Psychiatry has investigated the potential of psilocybin, a substance found in “magic” mushrooms, to help reduce obsessive behaviors in patients with OCD. The researchers aimed to remove the psychedelic effects of psilocybin to make the treatment more accessible to patients who are intimidated by hallucinations.

Many traditional therapies do not work for a significant portion, around one-third, of OCD patients. Therefore, finding a new approach could bring much-needed relief to these individuals.

In the study, the researchers conducted experiments on mice using the marble-burying test to see how psilocybin affected their obsessive behaviors. The results showed positive outcomes. Then, the mice were given medication to block serotonin receptors, which eliminated the psychedelic effects of psilocybin. Interestingly, blocking these receptors did not prevent the reduction of obsessive behavior. Additionally, the researchers observed a lasting reduction in obsessive behaviors in mice for at least seven days. These findings are promising for individuals with OCD, suggesting that this treatment could provide a long-term solution. Now, it is crucial to investigate the effects of this treatment on humans and determine if these benefits can directly translate to human patients.
