Comprehensive Guide to LSD: What You Should Understand

By September 9, 2023No Comments

LSD, commonly known as acid, is a potent hallucinogenic substance derived from lysergic acid, a fungus found on grains like rye. It’s sometimes referred to as “dots” or “lucy.”

A journey on LSD is often called a “trip,” and those who have experienced it will tell you it can be a wild ride, although not always a pleasant one. Trips can range from profound spiritual awakenings to terrifying experiences, commonly known as “bad trips.”

While there has been research into potential therapeutic applications for LSD, it remains classified as a Schedule I drug in the United States, making it illegal to possess, produce, or distribute.

Methods of Use: LSD is typically consumed through blotter tabs, tiny pieces of paper infused with the substance, placed under the tongue for absorption into the bloodstream through mucous membranes. In its original form, LSD is an odorless crystal, which is crushed into a powder and dissolved in liquid. While it can be injected, this method is not common.

Effects: LSD can induce a variety of short-term physical and psychedelic effects, but predicting the specific experiences is unpredictable and varies from person to person. Physical effects may include dilated pupils, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and altered body temperature. Mental effects can range from intense visual hallucinations and heightened sensory perception to feelings of euphoria, paranoia, and mood swings.

Onset and Duration: The effects of LSD typically begin within 20 to 90 minutes and peak around 2 to 3 hours, although individual factors like age, body mass index (BMI), metabolism, and dosage can influence the onset and intensity. A standard LSD trip can last from 6 to 15 hours, followed by an “afterglow” phase that can extend up to several days or even weeks in the case of high doses.

Comedown: Some individuals may experience an LSD “hangover” or comedown after the trip, characterized by nausea, agitation, and anxiety. This phase generally lasts around 24 hours.

Detection in the System: LSD’s duration in the body depends on factors like body composition, liver function, age, and dosage. Routine urine tests cannot detect LSD after 24 hours, but blood tests may identify it for up to 8 hours, while hair follicle tests can reveal traces for up to 90 days.

Interactions: LSD may interact with other substances, including prescription medications. Known interactions include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and benzodiazepines. Mixing LSD with other substances, such as shrooms, MDMA, ketamine, DXM, cocaine, or cannabis, can lead to unpredictable and potentially harmful effects.

Addiction and Risks: LSD is not considered addictive, but it can lead to tolerance with frequent use, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effects. Long-term risks include persistent psychotic symptoms and hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD), where individuals experience recurring hallucinations and flashbacks.

Safety Tips: While there’s no completely safe way to use substances, following certain precautions can minimize risks:

  • Avoid using LSD alone, and have a sober person present to intervene if needed.
  • Do not mix LSD with other substances, including alcohol.
  • Choose a comfortable and safe environment for your trip.
  • Use LSD when you’re in a positive emotional state.
  • Start with a low dose and give it time to take effect before considering more.
  • If you have a preexisting mental health condition or take medications that may interact with LSD, avoid using it or exercise extreme caution.

Recognizing Overdose: While a fatal overdose from LSD is unlikely, adverse effects requiring medical attention can occur with high doses. Signs of an overdose include irregular breathing, high body temperature, agitation, chest pain, hallucinations, seizures, and loss of consciousness. If you or someone experiences these symptoms, seek immediate medical help.
