Investigating the Anxiety-Alleviating Properties of Psilocybin

By January 10, 2024No Comments

School of Pharmacy Assistant Professor Cody Wenthur and his team are exploring the impact of stress in psychedelic drug treatment for mental health disorders, particularly focusing on psilocybin, the active compound in “magic mushrooms.” While psychedelics are gaining attention for their potential to treat mental health conditions, the mechanisms by which psilocybin induces long-term behavioral changes are not fully understood. The study, conducted by Wenthur’s lab, indicates a potential link between drug-induced stress and positive outcomes. Mice exposed to psilocybin showed a rebound effect of reduced anxiety, but when chronic stress was induced before psilocybin administration, the anxiety-reducing effects were diminished. The findings suggest that some level of drug-induced stress might be beneficial, but ongoing stress could have negative consequences. The study emphasizes the need for further research, potentially guiding the development of more targeted and effective interventions for stress-related disorders, including PTSD and anxiety.
