Australia is embracing a groundbreaking era of psychedelic medicine.

Australia will become the first country to legalize clinical prescribing of MDMA (ecstasy) and psilocybin (the main psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms) for specific mental health disorders. Starting July 1, authorized psychiatrists will be able to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) stated that these drugs are relatively safe when used in controlled medical settings and appropriate dosages studied in clinical trials. However, some experts are concerned about the move being premature as the drugs are still in clinical trial phases and haven’t received formal approval for mental health treatment by the US FDA. Other regions like Oregon and Alberta have also taken steps to regulate the therapeutic use of psychedelic drugs.
